U.S. President Barack Obama met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in the Czech capital of Prague and signed an historic nuclear arms treaty that will lower their deployed strategic warheads to 1,550.
The treaty, once agreed upon by the lawmakers of each country, would replace the expired Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) which has already expired.
According to the new treaty the United States and Russia would be limited to 1,550 warheads, a figure that is 74% lower than the number allotted in the 1991 START Treaty and 30% lower than the 2,200 each side was meant to reach by 2012 according to the 2002 Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty.
As well, the number of deployed delivery vehicles- intercontinental and submarine-launched ballistic missiles, has also been reduced to 700.
Obama hailed the treaty as a sign that the relationship between the United States and Russia was once again strong. While excited about the treaty Obama did tell reporters “While the New Start treaty is an important first step forward, it is just one step on a longer journey. This treaty will set the stage for further cuts, and going forward, we hope to pursue discussions with Russia on reducing both our strategic and tactical weapons, including non-deployed weapons.”
