Help for Jesse James, but for What?

Sandra Bullock’s estranged husband heads to rehab and heats up the debate over the validity of sex addiction as a real disorder.

After weeks of speculation on the state of his marriage following reports of multiple affairs, Jesse James checked himself into a treatment facility. The stories began to surface just days after James was at wife Sandra Bullock’s side as she won an Academy Award.

Despite his entry into a residential treatment center, there is still no admission of a specific addiction. Instead, James’ rep issued an exclusive statement to People magazine stating, "Jesse checked himself into a treatment facility to deal with personal issues. He realized that this time was crucial to help himself, help his family and help save his marriage."

James’ decision, made just as Tiger Woods makes his return to golf after his own marital problems and a stint in rehab for a purported sex addiction, is bringing the issue back to the forefront.

Celebs in Treatment

From morning shows to late night talk fests, the topic of sex addiction is on everyone’s tongues. Many are questioning the validity of the disorder, which hasn’t officially been classified as a disease in the way alcoholism or drug addiction have. Muddying the issue is the trend in Hollywood that shows celebs getting into trouble and then entering rehab without copping to any specific issue. Despite the lack of clarity, experts are in agreement that a compulsion to act out sexually without regard for the negative consequences is a serious problem. With that in mind, it may not matter why someone enters treatment as long as they are willing to take a close look at what isn’t working in their lives once they’re in the program.
