U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens to Retire at End of Term

United States Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has announced he plans to retire from his position on the nation’s highest court when the summer session ends in late June or early July.

Stevens, 89, is the oldest member of the Supreme Court and is the leader of the court’s liberal bloc. His decision to retire will enable President Barack Obama to appoint a second Supreme Court Justice, one of the most powerful acts a president can make.

While Stevens is set to retire his decision won’t affect the current dynamics of the court as Obama will almost certainly appoint another liberal to the court. Justices approved to serve on the Supreme Court serve a life term.
