The search for the four missing West Virginia miners has been suspended for a third time after crews were forced to exit the mine due to thick smoke.
Before being forced from the mine the crew managed to reach one of the airtight chambers that would have provided the miners safety but that chamber was not occupied. The empty chamber left little hope that the miners survived Monday’s blast that already claimed 25 lives.
There have been no signs of life thus far and with only one other chamber in the mine that the miners could have reached many have begun to accept that the toxic fumes inside the Upper Big Branch mine would have killed the miners.
Despite the dimming hope officials have said they will continue drilling a hole down into the second chamber to see if the miners were able to survive. They are also deploying cameras to the area to search for the miners.
