Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski Killed in Plane Crash, Several Senior Figures Among the Dead

An airplane carrying Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski and several other senior figures crashed while approaching a Russian airport, killing all 96 passengers and crew aboard.

Kaczynski , along with Poland’s arm chief, central bank governor, MPs and historians had been traveling from Warsaw to Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre in which thousands of Poles were killed by Russian troops.

According to reports the pilot of the flight ignored warnings from air traffic control that the fog was too thick at Smolensk airport and the plane should divert to another airport. The pilot continued anyway and slammed into trees.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said he would fly to Russia to meet with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and the two would tour the crash site.

Thousands of people have gathered outside the presidential palace in Warsaw to pay tribute to Kaczynski, a figure beloved by many in the country. A week of national mourning has been ordered.
