At least nine people have been killed and hundreds injured after soldiers and police clashed with anti-government protesters in Thailand’s capital of Bangkok.
According to reports the security forces had been attempting to retake areas of the city that had been controlled by red-shirt protesters. The security forces began firing tear gas and rubber bullets but the protesters responded by hurling petrol bombs. This led to live fire and explosives being detonated, killing four soldiers, four protesters one journalist.
The troops eventually retreated from the areas and army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd went on national television to appeal for calm. Kaewkamnerd went on to say that if the protesters continued to “the violence would escalate.”
The red-shirts are supporters of exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. They have called for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament and call an election, something the PM has refused to do.
