Bodies of Four Missing West Virginia Miners Found, Death Toll Pushed to 29

The search for the four missing West Virginia miners has ended after search crews at the Upper Big Branch mine discovered their bodies; five days after an explosion claimed the lives of 25 other miners.

Search crews had held out hope for the four missing miners but several attempts to enter the mine were short-lived due to toxic levels of gas. The hope was resting on the miners finding one of the airtight chambers in the mine that would have protected them from the gas but those chambers were found to be empty.

News of the four miners’ deaths was announced by West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin who said “The journey has ended.”
