Body of Polish President Lech Kaczynski Returns to Warsaw, to Lie in State for Week

The body of Polish President Lech Kaczynski has returned to Warsaw and will now lie in state for one week as the country continues to mourn the loss of their beloved leader.

Kaczynski was among 96 people killed on Saturday when the plane he was traveling in crashed as it approached Russia’s Smolensk airport in thick fog. The president had been aboard the flight with several key military officials, MPs and historians, all scheduled to attend a memorial thousands of Poles who died in a massacre during World War II.

According to several reports the pilot of the plane had been warned on several occasions that the fog was too thick and the flight should be diverted yet he continued to approach the runway and clipped a number of trees on the descent, ultimately leading to the crash that killed everybody on board.

Immediately after news of the crash acting Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski called for a week of mourning.

On Sunday Kaczynski’s body was returned to Warsaw, his casket draped in a Polish flag and prayed over by Catholic clerics before being ushered through the streets to the presidential palace where he will remain for a week long viewing.
