The Masters at Augusta National: Phil Mickelson Wins Third Green Jacket after Holding Off Lee Westwood
Phil Mickelson put together a sensation 5-under 67 on Sunday to overtake Lee Westwood and capture his third Green Jacket at the Masters.
Mickelson entered the day trailing Westwood by one stroke but he played flawless golf at Augusta National on the final day, working through the 18 holes without a single bogey and finishing an impressive 16-under for the tournament, three better than Westwood.
Mickelson managed to hold a two-stroke lead after the 15th and then moved ahead by three strokes on the 15th and it looked like he would be able to coast to the title. Westwood put some pressure on Mickelson with a birdie on 17 but the American remained calm and saved par to keep a two-shot lead heading to the 18th.
Westwood’s best efforts on the final hole resulted in par and Mickelson holed out with a birdie to lock up his third Masters victory.
While Mickelson and Westwood were dueling it was Anthony Kim who put together the round of his life and finished with a 7-under 65 to wrap up his Masters tournament at 12-under and a third place spot on the leaderboard.
As for Tiger Woods, his return to golf almost produced a remarkable story but it was obvious he was struggling with his shots. Tiger’s troubles still delivered an 11-under and a fourth place tie with KJ Choi of South Korea.
