Nigeria’s former military leader Gen. Ibrahim Babangida has said he will run for president when the country holds elections in 2011.
Babangida actually held power in Nigeria following a bloodless coup in 1985 and remained the military leader until he was forced to step down in 1993 after he annulled elections that had been considered fair.
A spokesman for Babangida said the 68-year-old will now seek the nomination of the ruling People’s Democratic Party. The PDP has already said it would seek a candidate from the north, an area that would include Babangida.
Nigeria is currently led by acting President Goodluck Jonathan who stepped into the leadership position after President Umaru Yar’Adua was declared unfit to lead due to ill-health.
