Academic Summer Camp Helps Teens with Character Development

At SuperCamp's learning and life skills academic summer camps, a major part of the ten-day curriculum is built around character development using the company's 8 Keys of Excellence as the model.

Throughout the teen summer camp, campers learn a new key, see how it is modeled by camp staff and discover how they can integrate the positive character trait into their lives, with family, with friends, and at school.

One of the keys is Speak with Good Purpose. Campers learn that words have the power to build people up and bring them down. They can uplift and enlighten, or depress and destroy. They learn that they have complete control over the words they use; therefore they must think before they speak.

At the summer enrichment camp, they also learn to focus on communicating positives: strengths, praise, encouragement, and to handle negatives carefully because one's intention is a powerful tool.

At this teen camp, campers discover that communication is the bridge between people; it's the glue that holds all relationships together. It's what forms the link between husband and wife, between parent and child, between teacher and student, between friends, siblings, partners, and co-workers. Relationships thrive or wither depending on the quality of the communication that serves them.

SuperCamp facilitators explain that speaking with good purpose can be a challenge; it takes courage, effort, and practice. But when this skill is mastered, the quality of relationships will change for the better.

Words are powerful. They can build or destroy. A few cutting words, let loose in a moment of anger, can wound someone for a lifetime. On the other hand, there are times when a few kind words make all the difference.

Learning this important key and the other seven of the 8 Keys of Excellence becomes an important aspect of what students take back home with them following the academic camp. It has lasting value and can make deep and meaningful changes in a young person's life and in their relationships with family and friends.
