Sudan’s election commission has said it would extend the country’s recent elections by two days to make up for delays in delivering ballot papers to polling stations.
Voting began on Sunday and was originally intended to end on Tuesday but polling stations will now remain open until Thursday. Despite the extension several opposition groups have already called the elections fraudulent and demanded new polls.
Sunday marked the first time in nearly a quarter-century that Sudan has held a multi-party election but with ballot delays and names missing from the electoral roll there have been a number of problems that have led opposition groups to cry foul.
While the elections involve a number of parties it is believed that President Omar al-Bashir will retian his position as will Salva Kir, leader of Southern Sudan.
