Landslide in North-Eastern Italy Derails Train, at least Nine People Killed

A landslide in north-eastern Italy derailed a passenger train, killing at least nine people and leaving more than two dozen injured.

The death toll could have been significantly higher but the train was stopped from plunging into a river by a number of trees in the mountain valley where the accident occurred.

According to reports the train had been traveling from Castelbello to Laces when the landslide, believed to be caused by an irrigation system bursting, knocked the cars off the rail near Merano.

Rescue crews were still digging through mud-filled cars looking for survivors, leading officials to say that the death toll could still rise.
