Former bodyguard of Tonya Harding and central figure in what may be considered the most notorious moment in U.S. figure skating history, Shawn Eric Eckardt, has died at the age of 40 in Washington County, Oregon from what has been called natural causes.
Eckardt, along with Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, Shane Stant and Derrick Smith were all charged in crimes relating to the attack of rival figure skater Nancy Kerrigan at a practice session during the 1994 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating championships.
After serving 14 months in prison Eckardt was released and later changed his name to Brian Seth Griffith as a means of separating himself from the publicity of the attack.
