New Jersey Abolishes Death Penalty

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine signed a bill on Monday morning abolishing the death penalty in the state, becoming the first to legislatively do so since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the punishment in 1976.

It was just last week that members of the General Assembly and State Senate voted to pass a measure that would abolish the death penalty and change the sentence of death to life in prison without parole.
