Overthrown Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has backed away from his pledge to fight for his office, announcing at a news conference that he would formally resign from his position if the interim government guaranteed his and his family’s safety.
The interim government initially stripped Bakiyev of his presidential immunity, threatening to arrest him if he refused to surrender but they have since softened their stance and said they would be willing to speak with the ousted leader.
Bakiyev was forced to flee to the south of the country last week after protestors led a violent uprising in the country’s capital and toppled the government. Shortly after the uprising Bakiyev said he would refuse to hand over his presidency but he has now changed his course.
On Tuesday Bakiyev said he would be willing to meet with Roza Otunbayeva, the leader of the interim government, to discuss the current situation but he would only do so if the meeting was in the south.
