U.S. President Barack Obama has formally opened a major nuclear security summit in Washington, welcoming several world leaders before issuing a warning that the risks of a nuclear attack being launched by terrorists has increased.
In his opening remarks Obama encouraged leaders to do more than just talk about solutions to the nuclear threat; he encouraged a course of action. An action that would help prevent terrorist groups like al-Qaeda from acquiring material for nuclear weapons.
The two-day summit has some notable leaders missing as Iran and North Korea were not among the invited guests and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu opted to stay home rather than face questions about his country’s nuclear facilities.
The summit comes just one week after Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, an agreement that would reduce their deployed nuclear arsenal to 1,550 weapons.
Obama also announced that South Korea would be hosting the next nuclear security summit in 2012
