Teens Grow At Academic Summer Camp

At SuperCamp's teen summer camps, the objective is to get into the teens' world. All loving parents strive to understand their teens. But sometimes parents aren't able to get a clear picture of their child's experiences because the information is filtered through their own adult points of view.

Understanding teens is what SuperCamp does. It's the life's work of the learning and life skills academic summer camps. "We don't just focus on their perspectives; we marinate in them - day in, day out," says Bobbi DePorter, president of SuperCamp. "And that obsession brings us an insight that we couldn't get any other way. It's mostly about becoming more aware of how we're relating to them."

SuperCamp's focus is to hear the teen's perspective first and this makes an impact with them. When they feel heard and understood, they're inspired to hear and understand others. A teen's whole concept of the world and his place in it shifts when he discovers what it looks like from someone else's point of view.

As it turns out, getting into another person's world is the fun part at SuperCamp. Teens find it easier to do this when they interact with other people in a team atmosphere, where daily activities and traditions strengthen bonds between team members. At SuperCamp team-building activities are woven in throughout the day. Every morning before breakfast, campers sing special team cheers for the facilitators. Music and rhythm are powerful aids to bonding. When the campers learn how great it feels to reach out and connect with others, they automatically begin to think further beyond themselves than they did before.
