Vladimir Putin Will Take Prime Minister Role if Dmitry Medvedev is Elected President

Speaking before a congress dominated by his United Russia party Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would take the role of prime minister if his chosen successor, Dmitry Medvedev, is elected in the March 2 presidential election.

With Putin’s popularity still extremely high in Russia the announcement almost guarantees that Medvedev will become the next president.

While the role of prime minister has limited power Putin would likely carry a significant influence on how policies and Russian affairs are crafted and carried out. As for Medvedev, the 42-year-old businesses man has already supported Putin’s transition to the position of prime minister.
