A species of giant rat has been discovered in Papua region of Indonesia. The rat is five times the size of a sewer rat and is reportedly fearless of humans.
The species was found in the Foja Mountains rainforest of eastern Papua province by a joint Indonesian and American research team. It is said to apparently be a member of the Mallomys woolly rat family.
A new species of pygym possum was also found in the rainforest by the team.
The forest is known to many as the "Lost World". Prior to this expedition, few humans have visited. Researchers say that there is a large number of exotic new species of palms and butterflies in this forest.
