The bodies of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and First Lady Maria Kaczynska are lying in state in the capital of Warsaw, days after the couple, along with 94 others, were killed in a plane crash while traveling to Russia.
Tens of thousands of mourners have held vigil outside the presidential palace since Saturday’s crash. On Sunday the body of Kaczynski was returned to Warsaw while Kaczynska’s body arrived on Tuesday, both were received with ceremonies at the Warsaw airport before being transported to the presidential palace.
After lying in state for the remainder of the week the couple will be buried on Sunday at Wawel Castle in Krakow.
An investigation into what caused the plane to crash remains open but it is believed that the pilots ignored warnings about the heavy fog at the Smolensk airport and when they attempted to land they clipped several trees and slammed into a wooded area, killing all on board.
The Polish delegation, which included military officials, MPs and historians in addition to President Kaczynski and First Lady Kaczynska, were traveling to Smolensk to attend a memorial for Polish victims of a World War II massacre carried out by Soviet secret police.
