Compass Minerals (NYSE:CMP) has released the sales volume report for the first quarter of fiscal 2010. The company reported that its sales volume has declined for the quarter. It’s rock salt was reportedly sold to the chemical industry in a total of 3,900,000 tons for the three months ended March 2010. The year ago period reported sales of 3,729,000 tons. The company reported having 108 snow events in 11 cities for the company’s primary North American highway deicing service. The same period of the previous year operated 99 snow events in the same cities. The numbers for the reported events do not directly correlate to the company’s deicing results due to various factors, such as relative significance to the company of the cities represented.

Compass Minerals International, Inc. (Compass) is a producer of minerals, including salt, sulfate of potash specialty fertilizer and magnesium chloride. The Company operates 11 production and packaging facilities, including the rock salt mine in Goderich, Ontario and the salt mine in the United Kingdom in Winsford, Cheshire. The Company’s salt products are used for highway deicing, dust control, consumer deicing, water conditioning, consumer and industrial food preparation, agricultural and industrial applications. Compass is a producer of sulfate of potash (SOP), which is used in the production of specialty fertilizers for high-value crops and turf. In the United Kingdom, the Company operates a records management business utilizing excavated areas of its Winsford salt mine with two other locations in London, England. The Company has two reportable segments: salt and specialty fertilizer. In April 2009, the Company acquired the salt business of Cutler-Magner Company.
