Megan Kanka killer escapes execution in New Jersey

Jesse Timmendequas was sentenced to death for the 1994 raping and killing of 7-year-old Megan Kanka, but will not be executed as New Jersey has banned execution. Timmendequas is one of the eight men whose sentence was commuted to life in prison because of New Jersey’s abolishment of the death penalty.

The 46-year-old’s brutal rape and murder of Kanka inspired “Megan’s Law” which requires authorities to notify people when a sex offender moves near them.

Timmendequas was found guilty in 1997 for convincing Megan to come to his home by telling her she could come see a puppy. He then raped and beat her before strangling her with a belt. He led authorities to her body a day later. He had previously been convicted of sexual assault on other young girls.

Governor Jon Corzine signed the bill Monday and said, “It’s a day of progress for the state of New Jersey and for the millions of people across out nation and around the globe who reject the death penalty as a moral or practical response to the grievous, even heinous, crime of murder.”
