St. Clair Bourne, Groundbreaking Documentary Filmmaker on American Black Culture, Dies at 64.

St. Clair Bourne, a legendary documentary filmmaker whose work inspired countless directors, producers, photographers and novelists, passed away on Saturday after suffering a pulmonary embolism in Brooklyn, New York. He was 64.

 

Bourne was nominated for an Emmy in 2001 for televisions Outstanding Non-Fiction Special and was nominated for the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for his work “John Henrik Clarke: A Great and Mighty Walk.”

 

In 2000 Bourne was awarded the IDA Award from the International Documentary Association for "American Masters: Paul Robeson: Here I Stand." He won the Certificate of Merit for the same film from the San Francisco International Film Festival.
