Hundreds Killed in China Earthquake, Thousands Remain Missing in Qinghai Province

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake in China’s Qinghai province leveled homes and buildings, killing at least 400 people and leaving thousands still missing as rescue crews continue to dig through rubble looking for survivors.

Officials have said about 80% of the buildings in Jiegu, the worst hit area, were left in ruins while electricity and water were cut. Lacking proper equipment, it has been difficult for search crews to effectively move debris to find those who remain trapped.

The powerful earthquake struck just before 8:00 a.m. local time in Yushu county, about 500 miles southwest of the provincial capital of Xining. As many as 10,000 people have been reported to be injured from the quake and officials have already said the death toll would rise significantly.
