Landslides Block Access to Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro

One of the most popular attractions in Brazil’s city of Rio de Janeiro has become inaccessible as landslides have blocked roads leading to the Christ the Redeemer statue.

Heavy rains and flooding triggered massive landslides throughout the city and are being blamed for at least 250 deaths and have left many roads impossible to navigate. Among those roads are the ones leading to the popular destination, the first time in its 80-year history.

More than two million tourists a year make the trek to the Christ the Redeemer statue which overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro. Severe mudslides hit Corcovado mountain in Tijuca National Park where the statue stands, effectively cutting it off from people.

Officials have said they hope to reopen the path within one or two months.
