Alcohol Abuse Among College Students Not to Be Ignored
The rise of drug and alcohol abuse among our nations youth presents some startling statistics. These same youth are our future engineers, doctors and leaders or not as the case may be. It may be startling to see how so many have already gone down the road to drug or alcohol addiction.
The youth of today are tomorrow's leaders. If one wants to get a good idea of what tomorrow will be like, all one needs to do is to look at the state of today's future leaders. Right now alcohol abuse among college students has reached startling levels as Narconon Georgia, a non-profit drug rehabilitation, education and prevention organization points out.
The direct impact on college alcohol abuse comes at a high price. 1700 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from unintentional alcohol related injuries. Another 599,000 will be injured due to alcohol abuse with more than 696,000 expected to be assaulted, with another 97,000 sexually assaulted because of alcohol if the trend continues according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
Add this to the 2.1 million college students who drove under the influence of alcohol and it gives cause to concern as to whether or not our sons and daughters will even be there to lead this nation forward.
Addiction to alcohol often gets overlooked. Narconon Georgia, clearly identifies the signs of drug and alcohol addiction on their website. However, as important as the signs of addiction are to recognize, it is just as important to ask for help when they are observed. Handling a person addicted to alcohol or drugs is seldom met with much agreement that they need to handle their addiction. It is only by the insistence of the ones who care that something is done about it; but it may just save their life.
April marks Alcohol Awareness Month. During this month many college students will be on Spring Break and alcohol will be a big part of the partying scene. Although responsible drinking is promoted in alcohol ads, there will still be far too many who overindulge. It comes down to the responsibility of parents and educators and those concerned to set the stage as to what is acceptable and what is not.
One need only look at the state of affairs of our current economic crisis in this nation and roll the clock backwards to when today's leaders were in college and look over their drug and alcohol histories to reveal why today's leaders are having such a difficult time dealing with current circumstances otherwise answered in basic economic and history textbooks.
Alcohol abuse can be handled. Narconon Georgia has a total non-drug program that effectively detoxifies the addicts body, thus handling cravings and educates them in the exact material needed to enable them to regain control of their life and lead a successful drug-free life.
