Vatican Calls U.N. Vote on Death Penalty “Sign of Hope”

Speaking on Vatican Radio, Rev. Federico Lombardi, a Vatican spokesman, addressed the recent U.N. vote calling for a moratorium on the death penalty calling the decision a “sign of hope” and said it could be “interpreted as a sign of hope and a step forward on the road to peace.”

According to the Vatican’s United Nations representative, Rev. Celestino Migliore, “Italy played an important role because it was able to involve the whole world, not just Europe.”

The moratorium is a nonbinding resolution that passed 104-54 with 29 abstentions. Among those countries voting against the moratorium were the United States, Singapore and Iran.
