Joel Dorn, Influential Record Producer, Dies at 65

Joel Dorn, a major influence in several of pop music’s most recognizable names, died on Monday after suffering a heart attack. Dorn was 65.

 

Starting his career out with Atlantic Records where he worked he was commissioned to produce several works of jazz for artists such as Herbie Mann and Max Roach. Dorn went on to produce works for the Allman Brothers, Bette Midler, the Neville Brotehrs’, and Roberta Flack.

 

It was with Roberta Flack that Dorn won Grammy Awards for “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”

 

Dorn left Atlantic Records in 1974 and went on to start or help start several labels including Night, 32 Records and Hyena.
