Volcanic Eruption in Iceland Grounds Flights Across Europe

Thousands of flights across Europe have been grounded following a volcanic eruption in Iceland that has sent a potentially dangerous ash cloud high into the airspace in which planes would travel.

Flights have been cancelled in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Norway while several other countries including Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain and France have announced planned closures.

The fears are centered on the fine particles of rock, glass and sand that are part of the ash cloud, all capable of jamming a jet’s engine and causing a potentially catastrophic failure that would send the plane down.

While the ash cloud has grounded planes it is not considered a serious health risk to the public due to its high altitude.

Officials have said it could be up to 48 hours before flights resume their normal schedule, leaving many across Europe to opt for alternative forms of transportation like train.
