Ousted Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev Flown to Kazakhstan

Ousted Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has been flown out of the country and has arrived in neighboring Kazakhstan after reportedly signing a letter of resignation, effectively giving power to the interim government led by Roza Otunbayeva.

Bakiyev was forced from office during a violent uprising on April 7 that left scores of people dead and many more injured. He fled to the southern region of Jalalabad to try and rally support but it became clear that he would not gain enough to reclaim his office.

The interim government originally wanted Bakiyev to resign from his position but he refused unless his safety was guaranteed.
