Explosions in Burma’s Former Capital of Rangoon Kills at least Nine People

A celebration marking the New Year water festival in Burma’s former capital of Rangoon turned deadly after three explosives were detonated in a park that was hosting the annual event.

At least nine people were killed when the bombs detonated near pavilions that had been erected in the park. While nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack officials have already said it was the work of terrorists, likely a group of dissidents.

According to some reports as many as 75 people were injured in the blasts and while Burma has seen a number of bombings most do not occur in a highly concentrated area and cause high death tolls. The death toll from the most recent attack is likely to rise.
