Small town in Texas develops Environmental Crimes Unit

Over the past three years residents of Azle Texas have seen their town slowly turn into a land fill.  Determined to not let their town turn into a junkyard, Jimmy Duvall and Kenny Wilson created the Environmental Crimes Unit.  Beginning with a slight confusion of how to properly dispose of tires, illegal dumping has spread throughout the community.  Currently more than 1,000 tires have been found in the Paschal Branch and there are plenty more to find.  No one really knows how they got there, or who is responsible for the mess.

The city hopes to be approved for grants from North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in order to fund a large scale clean up.  So far the town owes over $11,000 for six weeks of work.

At the moment Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital has volunteered to help clean up.  TRWD offered to build roads to transport tires easily and quickly.  H&H Recycling will cut out and dispose of steel rims in the tires and Azle’s SWEAT program is providing a group of teens doing community service.
