Plans to Store Natural Gas Approved, Environment Considered

Landis Energy Corp. requested approval from the Nova Scotia government to create new salt caverns for natural gas storage.  After receiving more information, the Department of Environment and Labor approved of Landis’ plans.

Landis plans to create caverns 700 meters deep using water run through an underground pipe from the Shubenacadie Estuary.  The salty water would then be disposed of via the tidal river.  They expect to develop four caverns, but its possible more may come.

Landis has been approved under the conditions that all environmental factors must be considered.  Many are concerned of any impact on the endangered wild salmon in the Shubenacadie Estuary.  30 meters of vegetation must be provided between watercourses and wetlands and the project must begin within two years.
