The efforts to locate survivors of Wednesday’s 6.9 earthquake that rocked China’s Qinghai province are continuing as soldiers have joined civilians and Tibetan monks in digging through the rubble of fallen homes and buildings in the region.
According to reports the death toll has hit 1,144 people and those reports also indicated that more than 400 remain missing yet local people have said that number is significantly higher and the actual death toll could be in the several thousands.
In the worst hit town of Jiegu nearly every home and building collapsed and those injured in the quake are being treated at a makeshift hospital that lacks medicine and proper sanitation. Across the region three is a tremendous need for tents and food.
There has been a concentrated effort by rescue crews to step up their efforts as those who remain trapped under debris face below freezing weather overnight due to the high altitude of the region.
