Trevor Berbick Nephew Convicted of Murder

Harold Berbick has been convicted of killing his uncle, Canadian heavyweight boxing champ Trevor Berbick. A jury found Harold and 19-year-old Kenton Gordon guilty in the 2006 death of Trevor.

Authorities say 54-year-old Trevor was beaten to death by his nephew and Gordon after having an argument over land. The two men then dumped Trevor's body in a church courtyard in Portland. Harold and Gordon will remain in jail until their sentencing on January 11.

Trevor has his own share of legal problems after his boxing career began to decline. He faced misdemeanor assault charges in 1991 after his business manager claimed he held her at gunpoint while accusing her of stealing $40,000 from him. In 1992, Trevor was convicted of raping a 16-year-old and was sentenced to 4 years in prison. He was also convicted of forging his wife’s signature in order to get a $95,000 mortgage on his Florida home. He served 15 months in prison for those charges and was ordered to be deported to his native Jamaica upon his release.

He fled to Canada before he could be deported and later returned to Florida where he was arrested and deported to Jamaica in 2002.

Berbick boxed from 1976 to 2000. He beat fighters including Iran Barkley, Greg Page, and John Tate.
