American magazine publisher Eric Volz was released from a Nicaraguan jail on Friday despite being sentenced to 30 years in jail on charges that he murdered his former girlfriend, Doris Jimenez.
The 28-year-old Nashville, Tennessee native was convicted in the 2006 rape and murder of Jimenez. Ten witnesses testified that Volz was in his Managua office at the time of the killing, but Nelson Danglas testified against him saying he saw Volz in the town when Jimenez was murdered.
Danglas was initially arrested for the murder, but was given immunity in exchange for his testimony against the El Puente magazine publisher. Julio Chamorro was also found guilty in the killing but was never linked to Volz.
Volz was released four days after a court overturned his charges. The court reversed the ruling and freed Volz from a police hospital in Managua. He had been suffering from several conditions including kidney stones and was receiving treatment at the hospital.
Volz was set to take the first flight out of Nicaragua to Atlanta, Georgia with his mother.
