Sudanese Elections Criticized by International Monitors

The EU and Carter Center each criticized the recent elections in Sudan, citing intimidation and harassment during the polling process. Each organization said the election process failed to meet international standards but did say it was a step towards democracy.

While the results have not been confirmed current President Omar al-Bashir is expected to remain in power when the announcement is made on Tuesday.

The elections, the first involving multiple parties since 1986, was part of a north-south agreement to end a lengthy war between the two regions.

As significant as the elections were Jimmy Carter, head of the Carter Center, told a news conference “It is obvious that the elections will fall short of international standards that are expected of advanced democracies... The people's expectations have not been met.”

Opposition groups complained about a lack of election material including ballots, issues with the voting list as well as voter harassment, all issues that helped the ruling parties in the north and south influence the outcome.
