Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Labels U.S. as “Nuclear Criminal”

In a statement read at a conference on nuclear disarmament Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the United States of being a “nuclear criminal” and said that while the U.S. insists it is against nuclear proliferation they have done little to abide by that decree.

The conference, held in Tehran, comes just one week after the United States hosted their own international conference in which 47 nations discussed nuclear security. Iran was not one of the countries invited to participate as the U.S., along with several other countries, believes they are trying to build nuclear weapons.

Those claims have been dismissed by Iran and during Saturday’s conference Ayatollah Khamenei addressed the issue saying nuclear weapons were prohibited by religion. In his statement the Supreme Leader said “Only the US government has committed an atomic crime. The world's only atomic criminal lies and presents itself as being against nuclear weapons proliferation, while it has not taken any serious measures in this regard.”

Iranian leadership has been angered by the U.S. accusations of nuclear weapon development and has insisted all countries who possess nuclear weapons should be suspended from the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency.
