Uzbekistan’s presidential election today is in a hush being compared to the silence heard in 2005 when the Uzbeck Dictator ordered thousands to be massacred. In response to the election, Dr. Irman Waheed made this statement. “Western governments talk of democracy, freedom and human rights and have even killed hundreds of thousands of civilians in Iraq , allegedly to remove a dictator, yet turn a blind eye to these farcical elections. If these elections were taking place in Zimbabwe or Burma , they would have been clamouring to condemn the intimidation of the public, the arrest and torture of opposition politicians, the arrest of journalists and the sham elections. Instead, despite the continuing evidence of torture and extrajudicial killings, Western governments like Germany are cosying up with Tashkent and calling for the relaxation of EU sanctions."
