Marijuana Display at Georgia State Capitol

Narconon of Georgia to Educate Public on Marijuana Abuse

Narconon of Georgia, a non traditional drug rehab program, will host an educational booth at Georgia State Capitol on March 19, 2008, advocating for recovery through its colorful and descriptive exhibit.   The large exhibit will fill the west end of the gold domed Capitol, generating awareness among our decision makers and public about addiction problems in Georgia and the need for solutions.   The main drugs of abuse will be featured, alerting kids of the unwanted side effects and parents of the signs of abuse.

Marijuana, the most abused of all illegal drugs, will have its own display.  Kids and adults will learn through video presentation and information boards, the truths and myths about marijuana.   The comprehensive exhibit will educate the public on marijuana while at the same time advocate drug education and treatment to state policy makers.

The executive director of Narconon, a non 12 step recovery program, stated, “Marijuana came to represent love and peace in the 60s and has never quite lost that image, but this is far from the truth.  Anyone who uses marijuana regularly is more likely to engage in aggressive and violent behavior and destroy property.  Mexican drug trafficking organizations, with high powered assault weapons control marijuana fields through torture and execution, not peace-loving flower children.

"Marijuana is not harmless, contrary to common belief.  Marijuana use can contribute to health, safety and learning problems and be a gateway drug for even more damaging drugs.  It is more potent than it used to be, increasing the likelihood of addiction and subsequent withdrawal symptoms.

"We think of marijuana users as young people and may erroneously dismiss it as a phase of life or something that kids grow out of.  The truth is that the earlier kids start using marijuana; the more likely they are to become dependent on other harmful drugs.

"Because marijuana users tend to be younger, it is critical that parents get the real truth about this drug.  Kids do listen to their parents.  Parents need to know that marijuana users are likely to be low academic and sport performers so they can tell their kids.   We will have literature available about this drug for the purpose of general family education.

"Through our displays on the risks of marijuana abuse, we want to deter kids from ever using it and encourage our legislatures to get behind effective drug education."

Also featured will be displays on cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, crack, and alcohol abuse.
