Australian Shoppers in Boxing Day Frenzy for Christmas Clearance

Shopping fever swept over Australia yesterday as many stores opened their doors early encouraging shoppers to come with incentives such as $100 coupons for the first 500 customers.

Known as the Boxing Day sales in Melbourne consumers flocked to every store promising after Christmas sales.

David Jones reports that the biggest sellers on Boxing Day are manchester and homeware as well as the expected women’s shoes and accessories.  Jason McVicar, the store manager for the Melbourne David Jones stated “It’s pretty chaotic.  Christmas is about buying gifts but Boxing Day is more about shopping for yourself.  It’s a bit of a tradition --- it’s mostly women who come with their daughters.”

In Sydney, DJs recruited star power in the form of singer Natalie Imbruglia to initiate the stores 102nd Christmas clearance.  David Jones expects one million shoppers to go through the store and leave with 500,000 towels, 200,000 women’s shoes and 250,000 handbags by 11:00 pm.
