Nepal Bridge Collapse Leaves 15 Dead, 50 missing

A bridge in Nepal collapsed on Tuesday, leaving 15 confirmed dead and more than 50 people missing. The collapse happened after some 500 people attempted the cross the 400 foot steel bridge while traveling to a fair in Chunchu village. The bridge was built over the Beheri River this year, according to chief government administrator Anil Pandey, but was not designed to support that many people at once.

Police, soldiers and villagers began searching for survivors in the icy water on Wednesday. 15 bodies were recovered and 32 were rescued but suffered injuries. Pandey says the chances of finding the 50 missing people alive were slim to none because of the water temperature and rapid current.

“We have policemen and soldiers on both sides of the river searching,” said Pandey.
