Narconon of Georgia, a non traditional drug rehab program, will host an educational booth at Georgia State Capitol on March 19, 2008, advocating for recovery through its colorful and descriptive exhibit. The large exhibit will fill the west end of the gold domed Capitol, generating awareness among our decision makers and public about addiction problems in Georgia and the need for solutions. The main drugs of abuse will be featured, alerting kids of the unwanted side effects and parents of the signs of abuse.
Cocaine, the second most abused of all illegal drugs, will have its own display. Kids and adults will learn through video presentation and information boards, the truths and myths about cocaine. The comprehensive exhibit will educate the public on cocaine while at the same time advocate drug education and treatment to state policy makers.
The Executive Director of Narconon, a non 12 step recovery program, stated, “Cocaine is the second most abused drug in the country, next to marijuana. Contributing to cocaine abuse is its association with Hollywood and Wall Street glamour, and with the advent of increased availability and lowered prices this drug has become accessible to almost everyone. Not so glamorous is the increase in bloody and runny noses from snorting coke or the emergency room visits from overdoses. There are at least 5,000 to 7,000 new cocaine users in America every year, and at least 25% will become addicted to cocaine within 4 years. Unless we educate the public and children on the dangers of cocaine use, and offer viable long term drug treatment, we will have continued violence and crime.
"Through our displays on the risks of cocaine abuse, we want to deter kids from ever using it and encourage our lawmakers to get behind effective drug education."
Also featured will be displays on marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, crack, and alcohol abuse.
