Chinese President Hu Jintao Visits Earthquake Site, Death Toll Climbs Over 1,700

China’s President Hu Jintao visited the site of last Wednesday’s devastating 6.9-magnnitude earthquake, speaking with survivors and encouraging search crews to continue rescue operations to find those who remain trapped.

President Hu cut short a trip in South America to travel to Jiegu township in Qinghai province, the site of the most destruction. While in the region President Hu told reporters “Rescuing those people who are trapped is still the main task. We must treasure each life.”

The death toll from Wednesday’s quake has now topped 1,700 people and another 256 remain missing but those numbers could be higher.

While it has been difficult getting supplies to the mountainous region Chinese officials have said victims have been provided basic shelter, food and water.

The Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader born in Qinghai province, has appealed to Chinese authorities to allow him to visit but it remains unlikely that his request will be granted.
