Three Italian aid workers accused of assisting in a plot to kill a provincial governor in Afghanistan have been freed after being held for more than a week.
All three workers, members of the medical charity Emergency, denied charges that they were bribed by insurgents to bring suicide bomb vests and weapons into a hospital in Lashkar Gah in Helmand province.
According to investigators the Italian aid workers had plotted with six Afghans to carry out a suicide bombing in Lashkar Gah. The plan was then to kill Helmand Governor Gulab Mangal when he came to the hospital to visit the injured.
Governor Gulab Mangal addressed the plot last week saying, “explosive suicide vests, hand grenades and weapons were brought to the Emergency hospital with the help of the foreign staff and their colleagues to carry out attacks in Lashkar Gah.” He went on to say, “According to their plan, an Emergency foreign staff member received $500,000 as an advance for killing me.”
Despite the certainty in which Mangal spoke the three aid workers were released after Italian diplomats argued for their freedom.
