Omaha Mall Gunman Tried to Kill Himself Two Years Earlier

Robert Hawkins, the 19-year-old who killed eight people at an Omaha, Nebraska shopping mall earlier this month before shooting himself, had attempted suicide two years earlier.

Court records revealed that Hawkins had swallowed 30 pills in January 2006 in an attempt to kill himself. That attempt landed him in an emergency room for six days. In August 2006, after therapists, caseworkers and his family believed he no longer needed to be in custody, he was released from state care.

In 2002 Hawkins had become a ward of the state after threatening to kill his stepmother.

According to court documents, Hawkins was an active drug user from the time he was 13-years-old.

On December 5 Hawkins walked into the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska and shot 11 people, killing eight before turning the gun on himself.
