Tiger Attack May Have Been Caused by Victims Taunting

Police are investigating whether the victims of the San Francisco Zoo tiger attack may have caused the fatal attack after taunting 300-pound cat. Carlos Sousa, 17, was mauled to death by Tatiana right outside of her cage. Two other people, who have not been identified, were attacked nearly 300 yards away by a café.

Sources say police think one of the three victims may have climbed over a fence and dangled a leg and other body parts over the Siberian tiger’s enclosure, taunting the animal. A source also says a shoe and blood were found between the fence and a 20 foot moat, bringing up the possibility that Tatiana may have escaped by grabbing onto the victims body.

“Somebody created a situation that really agitated [the tiger] and gave her some method to break her out. A couple of feet dangling over the edge could possibly have done it,” said zoo director Manuel Mollinedo.

Sousa’s father, also named Carlos, blames the zoo for his son’s death saying the zoo was not safe enough for the public. “They didn’t do enough for the public, because I think the zoo should be protective on both sides, protective for the people and protective for the animals,” he said.

It was Tatiana’s second attack on a human. The tiger had previously attacked a zoo keeper. Police shot and killed Tatiana to prevent her from attacking anyone else. The two surviving victims were taken to a nearby hospital where they are in stable condition.
