Joe Dolan, Irish Pop Star, Dead at 68

Joe Dolan died Wednesday have suffering a brain hemorrhage Christmas day. Dolan, who was one of Ireland’s first pop music artists, collapsed at his Dublin home and was taken to a nearby hospital where he fell into a coma and later died. He was 68.

Dolan is known for being a part of the “showband” era in the 1960s and 1970s as he performed in ‘The Drifters.’ He had several international hits including “Make Me an Island” in 1969. Other hits include, “You’re Such a Good-Looking Woman,” “Lady in Blue,” and “I Need You.”

 

Dolan suffered several health problems in recent years. He underwent hip replacement surgery in 2005 and stopped a performance in November after suffering exhaustion. He cancelled his Christmas tour. 

 

“He was a fantastic showman, has a great stage presence, has a distinctive singing voice and never forgot his roots,” said Prime Minister Bertie Ahern.

 

Dolan, who was never married, is survived by his three brothers and two sisters.
