Benazir Bhutto Assassination Sparks Riots in Pakistan

Pakistan’s military has been placed on red alert following the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto Thursday afternoon.

Supporters of the 54-year-old leader erupted in violence following news that she had been killed when a man shot her in the neck and chest at a rally in Rawalpindi. Seconds after shooting Bhutto, the man detonated a bomb that killed another 20 people who had attended the rally.

Following the announcement of Bhutto’s death supporters quickly took to the streets and smashed windows, burned tires, and chanted slogans against Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. Many have blamed Musharraf for not providing enough protection for Bhutto who had been targeted by assassins in the past.

Musharraf issued a statement in which he said, “I want to appeal to the nation to remain peaceful and exercise restraint.” The leader also announced three days of mourning for Bhutto, a gesture many of her supporters found to be little consolation.
